I would recommend this book series for letterers who have some background and experience with letterforms and or art。 The projects are simple and interesting， and can spark the creativity， but they make lettering/calligraphy sound “easy” to do and I feel like it would frustrate beginners to start here。 If you are able to copy another’s work， this will give you plenty to work off。 If you want to learn how to create from your own mind， this isn’t the best to start with。The real value I find in the I would recommend this book series for letterers who have some background and experience with letterforms and or art。 The projects are simple and interesting， and can spark the creativity， but they make lettering/calligraphy sound “easy” to do and I feel like it would frustrate beginners to start here。 If you are able to copy another’s work， this will give you plenty to work off。 If you want to learn how to create from your own mind， this isn’t the best to start with。The real value I find in these books is being introduced to a variety of Calligraphers and illustrators。 Each section is written by a different artist and their studio information is in the back。 It’s helpful to see how others put together and brand their businesses。 。。。more

really like the ideas and techniques explained in this book， so I think it's a great book for someone who's interested in starting out with modern calligraphy and/or hand lettering。 It explains everything from pen drills， alphabets， swashes and embellishments， and some really cool ideas for projects to letter。I already knew the basics， and I still learned a couple of things from this book。 I definitely want to keep it as a future reference。 However， I wouldn't mind if they would've went more in really like the ideas and techniques explained in this book， so I think it's a great book for someone who's interested in starting out with modern calligraphy and/or hand lettering。 It explains everything from pen drills， alphabets， swashes and embellishments， and some really cool ideas for projects to letter。I already knew the basics， and I still learned a couple of things from this book。 I definitely want to keep it as a future reference。 However， I wouldn't mind if they would've went more in-depth or provided more examples like alphabets or decorating inspiration。 luckily， we have Pinterest for that！ 。。。more

This book is basically “first draw some circles， now draw the rest of the owl” of lettering manuals。 You are just told what some of the tools are and are expected to do the rest on your own。 The techniques that are explained （if poorly） don’t seem to work for me and I can’t even figure out why

What a fun book！ This is a great introduction to calligraphy and hand lettering。 It gives a broad overview of different styles and applications of modern calligraphy， and a large number of potential project ideas。The visual guides are really thorough and helpful for getting started， and the drawing style used for the examples makes calligraphy very approachable。 The projects given help you think a little bit outside the box， offering instructions for writing on mugs and plates， for doing chalked What a fun book！ This is a great introduction to calligraphy and hand lettering。 It gives a broad overview of different styles and applications of modern calligraphy， and a large number of potential project ideas。The visual guides are really thorough and helpful for getting started， and the drawing style used for the examples makes calligraphy very approachable。 The projects given help you think a little bit outside the box， offering instructions for writing on mugs and plates， for doing chalked or painted calligraphy， and even for digitizing your new creation for online use。The limitations of the book are that there are not a lot of alphabets presented， and somewhat limited technical instruction on cursive calligraphy forms。 You won't， for example， find an in-depth stroke guide for the Copperplate alphabet they give， and you'll want to look elsewhere for further instruction on developing your pointed pen technique。These things being said， however， this book is an excellent starting point for your calligraphy journey！ If you have a little more experience， it proves itself a good resource for a fresh set of project ideas， along with some guides on how to branch out into other media you may not have tried。 。。。more
